Awning/canopy/shelter For Outside Of House?

Ok, so my house and my shed are joined together with a brick wall, and I wanted to put up some sort of shelter in the squared off area between shed and house. I’ve made a crappy diagram so it’s kinda easier to picture:http://i37.tinypic.com/2vcfiok.jpg
The yellow bit is the bit I want to put a shelter over, so that people can stand directly outside the door to smoke, or park their bikes, or whatever. Also, so the recycling doesn’t get soggy between collections. The yellow bit is around 20 square ft, and the “roof” will be around 8/9ft off the ground (the height of the shed and garden wall).
Somebody suggested just nailing a waterproof tarpaulin up over the front door on the house, along the garden wall, and along the roof of the shed, but I guess it would either have to be flat to avoid being wind-swept, or slanted to avoid gathering rain and collapsing…
Would an awning work? How strong are they against wind and rain? I live in the North of England so we get a lot of both :] Can the roll-out ones be kept rolled-out permanently?
Or else, do you have any other suggestions of what we could use as a sort of temporary roof? I can’t put anything permanent up because we live in a council house. :]

  1. HATE 2 PAY says:

a fixed metal awning is pretty strong, retractable if built properly can be left open, however even though a fixed is stronger i would suggest getting a metal retractable awning just in case , for when the BIG storms come, or you could always get one of those one car metal car ports and bolt it down, it’s all in what you want
