Backyard Help!!?

The house I just moved into has no backyard…not in the size sense, but in the landscaping and plants sense.
There is a medium sized plum tree in the northwest corner, but the rest is just dirt with dead weeds and old dead grass (though there is some wild grass growing along the fence). Where do I start in order to whip this yard back into shape? I want to make a place for a small vegetable garden, and I think I can figure that part on my own…but how or what do I do in order to get grass going in the back etc?
PS I am not (a)financially able or (b)willing to hire a landscape architect or whatever it’s called…I want to do this myself using Home Depot or OSH etc to get the materials I need.

A plum is inline with a japanese design which can use little water. If you want a lawn look use a bed of Mondo Grass
Use weed blocker / Visquine to cover other areas with smooth peebles Plant Nandina(false bamboo, japanese bamboo) and some ferns in shaded areas maybe some horsetails( leave in buckets to stop spreading)
Maybe some solar lights to save cost.
If you had a 10 X 20 area the cost would be somewhere in the range of $700 dollars for materials(rock, weedblocker, plants, lights… Keep in mind I was using 1 gallon plants to save on costs.
Well, much will depend on where you live and what type of climate you have. Also what kind of “dirt”? Right now in Florida we grow RyeGrass. This is terrific grass, wish it would grow all year! Anyway, we grow it in the winter as a ground cover. If there are lots of weeds or in your case…nothing, overseeding is done. This chokes/kills weeds and provides a great source of nitrogen for the spring grass. This will apply to you too, if your climate is similar. In spring you can choose from a variety of grasses and decide where to place flower gardens, vegetable gardens or whatever. No matter what you plan to do, the soil is the first thing that must be ready. I do my own gardening too and I love Home Depot! We have fruit trees here, 1 orange, 1 tangerene, 1 lime, 1 grapefruit and 1 Japanese Plum. We now have fruit all over the yard!! Want some? LOL! Happy Gardening. Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas!
