I recommend taking your bonsai tree to a nursery or garden center to have it identified.
ANY tree can be grown into a bonsai. It’s care will depend on what KIND of tree it is.
For example: If it’s a tropical (Ficus, say), it will need to be inside for the winter. If it’s a Juniper, it will NEED to be outside – even in the winter. Junipers need tons of sunlight, and are not suited to indoor growing, and they actually need the dormancy of winter to be healthy.
Without knowing what kind of tree your bonsai is, it’s very hard to give specific care instructions.
No such thing as a baby bonsai. Bonsai (although literally translated tree in pot) has much history and culture behind it, therefore there are strict guidelines to achieve before you are able to call the tree you have a bonsai (bone-sigh). A twig in a small pot is the opposite of what you want to achieve a bonsai. http://www.bonsai4me.com has all the info you need to grow trees into bonsais.
Now, if you want to keep your small tree in a small pot, that is way ok too! I think they are great additions to an outside garden, just please dont refer to it as a bonsai. Grow it as you would the actual tree, but incorporate good container growing practices.
Have well draining soil unless your tree likes it wet, probably dry between waterings. Use a chopstick and stick it in the soil, if it comes out dirty, dont water, if it comes out clean, water. If it is a deciduous tree, fertilize with a 20 – 20 – 20 every two weeks during the growing season. Harden off with a 0 – 5 – 10 in the fall. If it is evergreen, they have a different fertilizer regimen they follow.
Prune the roots and top of tree early spring, dont fertilize for 1 month. Hope this helps! Happy growing.
