Another alternative to building a larger box is to try and establish a ground cover in the area. Some ground covers require very little maintenance, one of my favorites is Vinca. It has periwinkle like flowers and the leaves are medium glossy green. Does quite well. Building a bigger box around the tree has some potenital disadvantages to it, one is that by filling in with topsoil etc around the roots you may restrict the trees ability to uptake air and water. And this can be a factor in whether or not the tree will live.

Even with Tree Roots You Can ! Buy bags of Organic Soil.. Don’t Dump .. Place a layer of Bags around the Tree.. Poke Holes in top & bottom.. add some loose soil on top – Plant
Annuals – They will ‘Cover’ the Bags & give You a Beautiful Showing !

If you like the tree try putting a few inches of dirt over the roots and build a bigger box around the tree. If you don’t like the tree then cover all the roots up deeply.

Do you want to keep the tree?
If yes larger planter boxes can always be made around the tree, just make them large enough to cover the roots. Then you can plant flowers or any plant that likes shade under it.
If you remove the tree I personally like spanish moss on a slope, it is easy to maintain and low maintenance.
