Can I Put Rocks From My Rock Garden In My Fresh Water Fish Tank?
| |
I’m re-doing my fish tank and today while I was at the pet store looking for supplies, I started wondering why I should pay them 5 dollars a pound for fancy rocks when ultimately they all come from the same place.
I have a rock garden outside my house and I was wondering if I soaked them for a few days, would it be safe to put a few of them in my fresh water tank? Or is something special done to them to make them worth so much money at the pet store?

Yes you definitely can.
But before you put them in your tank, make sure to sterilize them of any pathogens. To do this simply get pot of boiling water and boil the rocks in it for about 5 minutes. This will get rid of any unwanted germs that can kill your fish.
Be careful what rocks you choose!..
ou can always test it first, in fact i recommend doing both of these;
1: clean the surface of the rock, and use a little vinigar on the rock, if it fizzles, foams, it is no good for the aquarium, it would leak dangerous toxins into the aquarium.
If it does nothing, it more than likely is ok. from here i would,
2: test it in some aquarium water or about 2 weeks, and check water values frequently. It is supposed that you can also boil them?.. Better to be safe!
These are rocks recomended to avoid adding:
Limestone
Marble
Geodes
Dolomite
Shells or crushed coral – this one is ok but be careful
The more safer rocks include:
Granite
Quartz
Slate
Lava Rock
Onyx
Sandstone
You can use good smooth river rocks too.
just always do tests first.
you can boil them for a few minutes to kill any bacterias living on them and it should be fine as i have found many rocks outside that are now in one of my tanks
I really would not recommend it especially if you have used any kind of fertilzers or anything else in it. you would be surprised so many things can hurt fish.
