Because of the high cost of living and being unemployed due to the economy I have thought about a temporary solution.
I’m a male in my late 20s who is an only child and is stuck living with my parents. I”m lucky that I have a place to live with so many homeless people out there.
I live in the western United States which has mild summers and mild winters. Out winters are 65 degrees during the day and 45 at night. Our summers are 75 degrees during the day and 50 degrees at night.
Living inside my parents house is rough because I don’t have my privacy living inside their house. Its like I’m a child all over again.
I did graduate college with a BA degree 5 years ago.
Here is the idea I thought of which some may think is insane. I have actually though of this idea for years.
Since my parents house has a large backyard I have thought of building or buying a pre essembled backyard garden shed sort of like a childrens playhouse but bigger.
I would put a bed inside, electricity, an air conditioning unit and a plug in heater. There would also be a microwave and a small fridge.
The space would be very cozy but very small. Maybe twice the size of a closet. There would be a loft where my bed would be. Many of the units I’m looking to build or buy have very small windows.
The downside is that I wouldn’t be able to have a restroom inside the backyard building. If I had to go to the restroom in the middle of the night I would have to walk outside and go in the main house for the restroom.
The advantages of the backyard building would be being able to come and go as I please and sleep in late on weekends. I could pick up wifi signals in my parents backyard and get cell phone reception as well.
Some people think this idea is rediculus or abnormal. Interestingly other friends of mine who are woman actually think this is a baby step toward independance and a good idea. Believe it or not my guy friends think this idea is stupid.
I don’t know why the woman friends think this is a great idea?
Even though I could get over this I would be afraid to lock myself in this little backyard building. I would be afraid but could get used to closing the door and having it dark inside. I would have nightlights so I could close everything up.
Does this idea make me look crazy?
With the way the economy is I can’t afford $800 a month to rent a room or $1100 a month for a studio apartment.
Many woman I know who are friends or acquantances of mine said that I shouldn’t be embarrassed if I choose to do this. They even said that they would hang out in the shed and talk and watch TV.

I do know some California people who put up a little building like that in their back yard. It’s a pre-fab shed on a platform, very cute, with a door and a window. It’s ten feet square, the largest allowed by the building code. As long as it doesn’t have plumbing, so it’s not an actual one-room apartment, electrical service is permitted. They installed a loft shelf for a bed, a counter and chair for a desk, electrical outlets, a light, and a small air conditioner, very much like you’ve outlined. Actually, it’s almost too cute, and they’re worried that building inspectors will decide it’s not a storage shed at all. Maybe you should have some flattened cardboard cartons handy to “decorate” it as a storage place. You could keep them under the loft mattress.
Their shed was expensive to set up, but it’s a nice refuge for when one of the kids needs to work on a project, sleep when everybody else is awake and active, or just wants some privacy.
They do have to walk up to the house to use the bathroom. You could have a chemical camping toilet, I suppose, but you’d have to use the garden hose to wash your hands.
In old New Orleans and vicinity, planter families often built a little house on the property for an unmarried son. It was called a “garçonnerie”, French for “boy’s place”.
