they help kill rodents and are not dangerous if it is a garder snake. check your basement or porch for cracks. get a animal control person to remove it and check for babies if you get scared.

I wouldn't kill it. They are harmless to humans, but they will take care of real pests... which you may have around if this snake has taken up residence in yours.
If you must drive it away, please use something that won't kill it. Try a "mole pole". It emits vibrations in the ground that animals find unpleasant so they leave.

Why would you want to kill a garter snake? They eat mice and other small rodents. They are very beneficial to the ecosystem. They aren't poisonous.

I would not suggest to kill it, if he is large he is apparently finding lots of food around your home, If you get rid of him then you may be over come with what-ever he is dining on. Garter snakes are very beneficial, I myself really dont like snakes...creepy to me, but the ones that are harmless are actually doing you good.If you just cant take it any more call you animal control office, perhaps they will relocate him for you.
Good luck and God Bless

If the snake is that big, you probably also have mice/rats. They don't get that big for no reason. If you haven't seen mice, he's doing his job. I'd keep him around. He's not poisonous and just keeps the pests away. Just keep a look out for the poisoneous ones.

You're better off driving it away. try mothballs,or if you can access under the porch, set a container of ammonia there. Ammonia will repel skunks, might work for the snake.

Sounds silly but it worked for us, we had a little snake problem too - put moth balls in panty hose and put it all around the yard (and in your case under the house). Someone told me cedar chips are also a natural deterent.
