Grade 9 Math Question Using Foil?

Fred wants a square garden to be constructed around a square shed shown below. Genorate a simplified expression for the area of the garden (just the shaded in region). *Hint* You will need to use FOIL at least once here!
The picture shows one side of the shed being equal to 3x and one side of the garden equaling x+4
How would I go about solving this question? I know what foil is, but i dont know how it solves this problem..?

It seems like the question is – what is the area of the Garden minus the area of the shed (for the shaded region?)? If so…
Area Garden = (x+4)(x+4)
FOIL -> x^2+4x+4x+16 = x^2+8x+16
Area Shed = (3x)(3x) = 9x^2
Area Garden – Area Shed= -8x^2+8x+16
or -8(x^2-x-2)
