Herb gardens seem to have caught the imagination of everyone who enjoys gardening, especially those who don’t have enough spare time to really nurture and care for their plants. Herbs are relatively simple to grow and look after; whether you are growing them outside or indoors.
Nowadays when individual houses with extended lawns have had to make way for blocks of apartments with balconies or terraces, indoor herb gardening has become one of the most innovational techniques of growing herbs. From pots placed on the window sills in your kitchen to window boxes or hanging baskets on your patio or balcony, herbs can be one of the most beneficial parts of your living area.
Growing herbs indoor is really simple, they generally need very little care but naturally they need a source of good sunlight. Some of you may have concerns about what will happen to your delicate herbs when winter comes round each year. Will they be capable of withstanding the lower temperatures and frosts of the winter months? One way to instantly get rid of those concerns is to grow your herbs indoors. The great thing is there is no need to make any great changes to your home to enable you to enjoy your hobby of indoor herb gardening.
So, having got this far the obvious next question is how you grow your own indoor herb garden. To begin with all that is required is a south, west or southwest facing open area, this can be out in your main garden area or can be a window box or space on your patio. Really anywhere is suitable as long as it will receive sunlight for a minimum of five hours every day. If you are uncertain about how to begin indoor herb gardening, here is a great tip: The herbs Rosemary, Mint or Thyme are all very good choices to start off your garden. They are easily obtained either from your local garden center or nursery or you can even grow them from cuttings quite readily.
If you are gong to start your herb garden with cuttings make sure that you let the soil to dry out slightly. To begin with you can start by growing your herbs in a soil-less mix of perlite, vermiculite and peat. Always be sure that your indoor or outdoor herb garden receives plenty of natural light, but don’t expose them to extreme heat.
If you are going to start off your herbs from seeds, you can begin by filling a clay or terracotta clay pot with potting soil (easy to obtain from any garden center or nursery. Having set the pots up all you need do is place the seeds in the soil following the instructions on the packet and then sprinkle them with fresh water. Now, place the pots near to a window towards the south or west so that they can get plenty of the sunlight that they need to flourish.
It’s quite possible to add a touch of glamour to your indoor herb garden, you can use pots of the same material, shape and size to add symmetry, or do the opposite to create contrasts. If you are growing your herbs in pots be sure that the seeds you buy are labeled as “compact” which means that they are meant to be grown in pots, instead of the regular garden varieties.
