How Can I Kill The Weeds And Bits Of Grass Popping Up In My Garden Without Killing The Bushes?

So our yard has a huge steep hill next to the patio that was (crappily) landscaped with a ton of mulch and 6 or 7 large, various bushes. The problem we are having is alot of weeds and grass popping up in there. We have tried simply pulling up the weeds. The “garden” is so huge that it is a 2 hour job and the weeds are back in full swing in a week or two. We made a big push one weekend by pulling up all the weeds and putting down new mulch to try and suffocate the weeds out and keep them from coming back. No good. We live in Germany and they dont allow most chemical weedkillers. Even if they did, we cant read the labels at the home stores to see what we are buying. I read about using vinegar, but most websites say it will kill any plant it touches. If we kill these bushes, we will have to pay for them when we move out. The housingmeisters solution to our problem was simply to mow over the garden. Obviously this cures the sympton instead of the disease. Is there anything more mild than vinegar that I can put down that will kill the weeds and grass, but not harm the larger bushes?

Vinegar is really a pretty mild solution. It will only kill what you pour it on. It shouldn’t harm a shrub – you would need an awful lot of vinegar to kill a bush. Also you can pour boiling water on a weed to kill it. A barrier, like a few layers of newspaper or landscaping fabric under the mulch, would keep the weeds down. A pre-emergent weed preventer would be great, but probably not available in Germany from what you say.
