How Do You Clear Out An Unkempt Garden To Plant A New One?

My husband and I have moved into our new home and we are trying to get the landscaping in order. We have a 1/2 acre lot in the city but it needs work!! There is a nice tree out front that I would like to plant flowers around but there are tons of weeds all around it, it looks like someone used to have flowers and mint/herbs there but it is overgrown now. How do I get it ready to plant flowers? I am new to gardening by the way and have limited funds since we are replacing all the windows and flooring in the home.

Since you are short of funds, it means you will need lots of elbow grease. Start by buying some tools first, a spading fork, a good quality garden spade, and a garden hose and a sprinkler. Also get a roll of black garden plastic. You will probably also want a lawn mower. Plan out the size of your garden and the planting arrangement of the flowers. Soak the ground and cover it with the plastic while you research the flowers at the library. This should take a day or 2. By then the ground should be wet enough to dig the weeds and turn over the topsoil. It also will help kill the weeds. Remove the plastic before you dig and save it for use later. Go to the goodwill or second hand store near you and buy a couple of gardening books. You can also go on line to http://www.freeplants.com and read up on the information there. Hope this helps.

Is there anything out there you wanna keep? The easiest thing to do is to go out after a good rainstorm when the ground is still really soaked, and just pull everything, If you don’t want to wait for rain, you can of course use a sprinkler or something. And since you just moved into your new home now would be a great time to start composting, everything you pull out would be a great start. Good luck with your new home!

just pull every thing up after a good rainstorm or just soak the soil. it should be just about right for planting. you may have to add more soil.
