Growing roses is really not too difficult as as long as they are carefully looked after it is really very easy to grow roses in virtually any garden. There are some varieties that do take a lot more care than others but you should not allow yourself to be daunted or put off by the prospect. Roses willl always thrive best in an open, sunny situation on any kind of reasonably fertile, well drained soil.

It is really important not to plant them in a spot that has recently been used for rose growing. The soil there becomes what is known as ‘rose sick’ and new plants lack vigour and will never really grow well.

The golden rule when you consider planting roses in your garden is to pamper them at planting time. First water your container plant well, or even better soak your bare root plant in a bucket for at least an hour then dig over the planting site to a spades depth, mixing in plenty of compost or well rotted manure as you go.

Lower the plant into the prepared hole and make sure that the knobbly union of roots and stem is placed just below ground level. Mix the soil that you have dug out from the hole with a bucketful of well rotted manure or good compost and fill in around the roots. Water well.

Roses need to be pruned to keep them within bounds and to keep be bushes an attractive shape, to promote fresh young growth and to make them produce as many flowers as possible. It is best to do the main pruning in early spring just as they’re starting into the new seasons growth.
