Is Gardening Lava Rock Real Lava Rock?

Are the light, red rocks sold in home and garden centers actual lava rock? I have some real lava rock a friend brought back from a Hawaiian vacation and it seems a lot heavier. Can this real stuff be usedfor gardening?

  1. Sure…. why wouldn’t it be. It’s called Volcanic Pumice… and there are billions of tons of it just laying around in some places.

You know that if have real lava rocks from Hawaii it’s very likely you’ll be strung with bad luck. It’s a old Hawaiian myth. I live in Hawaii and the locals here know not to take anything from the “heiau” which are sacred grounds and also other things like lava rocks. As for your question, IDK it’s probably not. Do you think they would take the time to go to the volcano and get the rocks?

Yes, and it’s used by orchid growers all the time.
