Landscape Help! We Just Cut Down A Tree In Front Of Our House…?
![]() |
And now it leaves our front yard a blank canvas, BUT…the tree stump and roots from 2 previous shrub trees make it pretty tough to plant any garden. Any ideas of how to make the outdoors look beautiful without planting around the stump or costing too much???? Alternative ideas appreciated!!

You can build up raised beds and plant in those, or use plants in containers. I’ve seen people hollow out tree stumps and use them as planters- so if the tree was big you might try that.
Depending on where you are ans what appeals to you, you could decorate with large stones, driftwood, seashells, colored gravel, metal or stone sculptures, bird baths/feeders, etc.
Pick up a few home/garden mags and see what is available.
have you thought about having the stumps ground out, or renting a grinder and doing it yourself? The cost depends on the size ot the tree, but I found it to be helpful when we had to cut a HUGE tree down that had been hit by lightening. This would allow you to replant grass, flowers or new trees and design the lawn you want, instead of the one you were stuck with!
You can make a small but wide hole in bark itself. Grow plants in it. If bark looks ugly, you can plant rose or jasmine besides it. small flowering plants in bark and colorful roses would make excellent combintion and they won,t cost too much
You can use the stumps to your advantage by placing a bird bath on it or potted plants. You can place some potted plants in front also to give it a tier effect. Use bright colored pots.
