My Goldfish In A Pond In The Garden Are Dying One By One, There Is Also A Frog Living In And Around The Pond.?
Could the frog be taking the fish? He has become quite big and the fish who are dying are the smaller ones. One had a cut on its belly and though I took him out and kept him in a separate tank hoping he might recover, he died today. Should I get rid of the frog before he eats them all? Or I am I blaming him in the wrong? Could it be the other Goldfish who are attacking and killing each other? Help I really love my fish. But find the frog interesting too.

OK, probably NOT the frog. I have a pond and frogs have moved in from all over. They eat flies, worms, various bugs, IF they could catch a fish they MIGHT eat it.
Thing is, they are not built for catching fish. Let alone holding a flopping fish.
So rule out the frog.
(Bullfrog that is HUGE, MIGHT…. might…. might… be able to swallow baby fish. But even those are designed to snatch up bugs.)
Besides, you said your fish are dying, not vanishing. Frogs eat their food whole. You would not see dead fish. Just gone fish. (More likely other preditors would do that.)
Best bet would be water quality problems. Or illness that has gone untreated.
FIrst check your amonia, nitrites etc.
Then look at your fish carefully. (I know you probably don’t know what exactly to look for, here are some tips.)
Skin and eyes should be clear, free from blotches, streaks, fuzz, dots, bugs, missing scales, raised scales.
If you see any of those post again.
Breathing should be fairly slow and regular. If it’s cold that will be no matter what.
Don’t ever let your pond freeze completely across the surface. I keep a pump in mine, with just a hose shooting water straight up. Moving water won’t freeze and that hole in the ice is enough to keep the water oxygenated.
now that’s about all you can look for now. There are other problems fish can have that you simply cannot do much about. Internal parasites for example. VERY hard to diagnose let alone cure.
A water change can never hurt. See if you can test for amonia as soon as possible.
try taking out the frog if continue of death then gee idk its the temperature, if not something couldve done something to your water…………..hm if it wasnt a rock that made the cut then had to be somehting…..lol
Is the frog a bullfrog?http://www.digitalfrog.com/resources/arc…
If so, then he’s probably eating/attacking the fish. Bullfrogs are known to.
EDIT- That’s a bullfrog pic
My goldfish cohabit the same small pond in the back garden with a large frog population and with no apparent problems, its not a cat is it? Or even a heron although I doubt it.
Hi,
HAHAHA LOL that is the funniest story ive ever heard man. Ok first of all i need to know if it is a wild frog or a frog that was bought from a pet store.
Wild frog: It may have atked the fish because of hunger
Bought frog: NO it did not atk the fish very rare.
He could, but it’s unlikley. The problem could be that the frog is a carrying a diseas the fish arn’t used to. Or, perhaps it’s the outdoor enviornment effecting them. I suggest taking two or three of them out and bringing them inside to see if they live. You could e right about fish fighting fish. It could be that one or more of them have nests in the pond and are protecting them.
hmm..It could be possible you have herons near your pond?..If its bullfrogs yes they eats fish of smaller kinds..If your Goldie’s are 1-3inches I can see the frog eating them if the frog is big..Bigger fish no..I would put a net over your pond if you find you have herons near by put up a fake one since these birds are very Territorial and will not go near others unless it’s no mate..Its really hard to say whats going on.. but other critters like cats coons etc will eat your fish..
I assume this is an American question, cos our frogs don’t get that big.
Yes, fish sleep and your bull frogs are active at night.
Move the frog and if the problem stops it was the frog, so take the frog for a walk and rehome it far from your fish. If it wasn’t the frog, it isn’t the goldfish so you have an unseen predator?
it really depends how long the frog has been living with them…
hope that helps
vote for me as the best anwer because i want to get to lvl 2…tysm
