I own a condo, and have a small area in the fron where there are currently shrubs (ugly ones) I love flowers and colors. What kind of bushes or shrubs can I put in (after removing other ones) that will not grow to big or to high. Due to condo rules I cant have anything grow higher than my windows in the front.
For now, Im going to plant flowers around the shrubs, so what flowers can I plant will grow well in shade, some sun. Someone told me pansies or petunias? Any other ideas for a small area are appreciated. I dont have a green thunb and this is the first time I can actually garden….(i killed bamboo to give you an idea)

If you are looking for a smaller shrub that has beautiful flowers then I would go with a hydrangea. There are a lot of new ones out that are pretty hardy and are smaller. As long as you water them, you should have good luck with them.

As for the flowers around the shrubs that would take shade part sun, I would recommend sun impatients. They will flower all summer long and are bright colors.

Ooh! Bleeding hearts, Astilbes, Hostas, and lily of the valley are all plants that like the shade. Very pretty too.
Honeysuckle is a climbing shrub that like shade too and has very fragrant flowers all summer, but they climb on any/everything, so you can prune when necessary. They attract hummingbirds and bees too.
Lavender is my favorite and although it grows best in the sun, it will grow, bud and flower in sun/shade area. Very fragrant and pretty, and its presence deters animals from getting in and eating other plants and flowers.
These dont need much care at all, and if you want to put some plant food on the ground around them once or twice between spring and fall you can. They maintain themselves just fine.

Wow…bamboo…that IS bad. But fortunately there are some pretty summer flowers you can grow that while they require watering (you’re gonna have to do SOMETHING!) they’re pretty hardy. Petunias are OK, they get leggy; pansies are coming out of their best growing time (cold/cool weather) so they’ll drop dead on you soon. Try begonias–you’ll be stunned to see how many varieties there are–and impatiens. Here’s another site to look at, which I found by typing in “shade loving plants”:http://landscaping.about.com/cs/lazyland…

Hi, the best way I know to get pictures of items is try this. Go to yahoo or Google image search and key in gardens, or whatever item you’re looking for. Voila, you are presented with tons of great pictures too look at. Most are linked to a website where you can find out more information. Also, have you ever considered solar lighting for your yard or fountains? Below is an article I found on solar lighting that you may find interesting. Good luck and have fun!
