What’s The Best Way To Clean Up My Landscaping?

Ads By CbproAds

We moved into a house that had gardens ect at one point, but has overgrown for about 5 years. We waited a year to see what grew, nothing too great except bulbs which are up now. I am pulling out the rock borders. What do I do then? Can I move the current plants/bushes etc? How do I decide if the trees are too big for the house?

im a professional landscaper and my advise is the best way to clean up your landscaping is first remove all litter ( dead wood on trees, shrubs, last years spent blooms leaves…etc. thin out any over grown per-annuals and trim all evergreen shrubs. small bushes are ok to move but larger ons may die unless you get a big enough root ball… water very well after moving your bushes. shrubs are bettere off moving when dormant, but by all means dont move them when it 100 degrees out. with new growth coming out, id move them soon or forget about it till fall or mabey just cut them down and start new.don’t trim your other shrubs because there about to bloom ( trim your blooming shrubs approx. end of June at the latest or start a week or so after the blooms die off…. edge and define all beds and a fresh layer of mulch. If the trees are over hanging your house or power/cabel/phone lines you may want to look into having them cut,,, if large trees are near the house and pose a threat you may want to remove them. Also tree roots under foundations or near septic/ water lines… but remember those trees will cut you air conditioning bill in the summer big time . Also its time to seed and do weed control in your lawn,, but follow manufacture instructions on products because you don’t want to stress your grass or apply fertilizer and weed control on grass seed or new grass sprouts….. I hope this helps answer your question… some of it may seem over whelming but if you take 1 chore at a time and maybe hire out some of your larger tasks it may go easier.

You’re better off moving bushes opposite their blooming season. So, if a bush is blooming now, move it in the fall. If it is a summer bloomer, you can transplant it now, but you’ll need to cut back the bush by 30%, possibly eliminating this year’s show.
As for the trees, that is a personal choice as much as anything. If they need to be trimmed, hire someone to do it for you.

Clear everything else out but the big trees and see what you have left.
Best to start with a fresh look.

you can move the bushes and tress still. avoid moving them when its kinda cold, because that could shock the plants and have them stop growing. take a shovel and cut the ground around the plant, and the roots in a circle. the bigger the plants the more roots you want to have. once its out of the ground, re-plant it and water it somewhat soon. also make sure you have the plants in their recommended sun exposure spots(full sun, shade, etc..) good luck

Due to the complexity of this problem, I would recommend you hire an landscaper to get your yard in shape. Usually they will come out and quote you usually for free. You could just rip out the tree’s and plant new ones, but i think the landscaper is your best choice.
