Where Do We Begin The Landscaping?

Just purchased a brand new home in Wisconsin and we need landscaping advise. We are first time home owners and there is not a tree or plant on the property. We will seed the lawn, but need to know what kinds of trees or shrubs to buy. We want something that will come back every year with minimal maintenance. Also looking for affordable and attractive plant & tree ideas. Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

You must start with a plan. If you are going to do this yourselves, then a plan is a must. There is landscaping software available that could help but for now a simple birdseye scale drawing of your house an property (photo copy of the blueprint maybe) will do. Take it one step at a time. The step that will give the most immediate impact would be a well designed foundation planting. Foundation planting means all the plant that you place around the foundation of your house. I saw that one of the other answerers suggested you take a walk around your neighborhood with a camera and see what you like. This is good advice and I would suggest doing it on the weekend as you might meet the homeowners doing yard work and tap them for more advice. Good luck!
Begin with the front yard!
I suggest you hire a landscape architect, or landscaper to develop a plan for your entire yard.
If that’s out of the question, then do this: walk around the neighborhood and your town (walking is important–you need time to look at what you see). Take your camera. Photograph landscaping things you see and like.
Now, take a photo of your home, put it on your computer and print it out large–maybe across 4 sheets of paper. Tape them together.
Print all the photos of the landscapes you liked. Snip out the stuff you like and place it on your large photo of your yard. Do this until you have an idea of what you like and where.
Then, take the whole thing to the garden store and ask for help identifying the plants.
The beginning stages of designing a landscape are much more about long term planning than picking out specific plants. Things to be considered are fences, garden sheds, patio’s, pools, playground areas,etc.. Once these things have been considered, planting areas can begin to be layed out. Once the beds are layed out your local garden center can help you chose the right plants for individual micro-climates in your yard ie north side shade or south side full sun. I hope this helps.
I would plant some fruit trees. Then i would plant some Roses along the front and sides of the house .Then in the back yard i would plant some razbaries in the sun.then along the front of the lawn i would plant a varity of flowers.
i would start off at putting in a stone pathway through your yard maybe from the front to the side of the house. then i would just research the plants that are low maintanence, and a tree. any little things will be a big improvement.
